Zirconia porous (ZR-95-VG)

95% ZrO2

Porous Zirconia – a High-Performance Material with Unique Properties Porous zirconia (ZrO₂) belongs to the family of advanced technical ceramics and is a true all-rounder for demanding applications in laboratories, industry, and research. While chemically identical to its dense counterpart, its open-pore microstructure offers several distinct advantages, especially under thermal and mechanical stress. One of the key characteristics of porous zirconia is its good thermal shock resistance. In high-temperature environments – such as during rapid heating and cooling – internal stresses can develop in the material, often leading to cracks in dense ceramics. The porous structure acts as an internal buffer, absorbing and evenly distributing these stresses, thereby significantly reducing the risk of cracking. This makes porous zirconia ceramics ideal for cyclic thermal applications, such as in high-temperature furnaces, laboratory equipment, or precious metal casting.

In laboratory use, particularly when melting precious metals, proper handling is essential to ensure the longevity of zirconia crucibles. We recommend using porous zirconia crucibles in combination with high-grade alumina crucibles (quality KR-98-VG), embedding them carefully with a suitable investment compound. This approach protects the more sensitive porous structure from mechanical stress while ensuring uniform temperature distribution. The result: significantly longer service life and improved process reliability.
